Changes for cable TV users from July 1

Starting on July 1, 2024, cable TV fees will no longer be billed as part of your ancillary expenses. If you wish to continue using cable TV as usual, you must set up your own contract in good time. You can find all relevant information here.

Your cable TV service is currently still provided as part of your tenancy agreement. Vonovia concluded a collective contract with a telecommunications company for this purpose. Vonovia currently bills for the costs incurred in providing television via your apartment’s ancillary rental expenses. However, with the amendment to the German Telecommunications Act (’TKG amendment’), the German government has abolished the allocation of cable TV fees to ancillary rental expenses. The new law goes into effect on July 1, 2024.

What this specifically means for you: As of July 2024, your usual TV service via the cable network will be automatically terminated. The fees you pay to receive cable TV will then no longer be billed via your ancillary rental expenses. If you wish to continue using cable TV as usual, you must take out a separate cable TV contract for your home in due time.

How to set up a single-user TV contract:

  1. Enter your address in the form below.
  2. You will then be redirected to a provider that is available where you live.
  3. Set up your own contract.
  4. Continue watching your TV programs as usual.

General information on the German Telecommunications Act (TKG)

An amendment to the German Telecommunications Act (”TKG-Novelle”) came into force on December 1, 2021.

The lawmakers’ aim in introducing this amendment is to further accelerate broadband expansion and strengthen consumer rights. Among other things, it changes the rules surrounding the provision of cable service in your home.

  • Previously:
Vonovia concluded a contract with a telecommunications company for the provision of cable TV in your building. This means that you currently receive TV automatically as part of your tenancy agreement and do not have to take out a contract yourself. Vonovia includes the costs of this in the ancillary rental expenses for your apartment.
  • As of July 1, 2024:
Once the change in the law comes into force, allocating costs in this way will no longer be permitted (up to June 30, 2024, at the latest) and your usual TV service via the cable network will be automatically terminated.
